Owokere "Benji" Unanaowo (oo-nana-whoa) is a filmmaker and screenwriter from the Bay Area, California. The son of a Nigerian immigrant and a Black American, he profoundly loves storytelling across the diaspora. He is pursuing an MFA in film production at the University of Texas at Austin. Benji is passionate about history and uses historical folklore and narrative to explore how people and the choices they encounter influence society. His goal is to shed light on their stories by creating films that blend complex layers with simple storytelling, giving those in the dominant society a grounded perspective while also aiming to inspire those living on the fringes of society.
